Depressants are a drug that can fall into many different categories such as alcohol, marajuana, and pills. It is a form of drug abuse used to get away from any source of depression the user may be experiencing in their everyday life.
Social Effects and History
Depressants were intended for use as an escape from medical and phsycological issues that people were going through in their everyday lives. Common depressants such as alcohol were used as a part of religious ceremonies and for social occasions. Those who use depressants can become unhealthy and they may upset their family and friends. Also they might become more withdrawn from their real life to spend more time with the escape of the depressant.
Effects on the Body
Depressants slow a person's heartrate and central nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord. When taken efffectively they can be taken as a way to escape symptoms like anxiety and and sleeping disorders. When taken without a medical need they can damage the brain or spine.
Uses
Depressants come in many form and can be taken orally in the form of pills, or also smoked or injected. Depressants in the form of pills are normally prescription drugs that are bought under the counter and used without a medical need. Other depressant forms can be just as dangerous even if they are legal if they are abused.
Abuse and Addiction
Alcohol abuse is extremely common because for most people it is a quick and legal way(if over 21) to get the escape. Other depressants can be obtained with a prescription and can be safe if used properly, but if used improperly they can become dangerous and addictive.
